Why Homemade Black Bean Burgers are a Plant-Based Essential

Have you ever noticed how your food cravings can transform with the seasons? This summer, my desire for comforting, substantial meals led me straight to creating the ultimate plant-based burger and fries experience. While I typically gravitate towards vegetable-heavy plates, lately I’ve been all about embracing rich, satisfying vegan foods that truly hit the spot.

Making your own black bean burgers is a game-changer for several reasons:

  • Control Your Ingredients: You know exactly what goes into your meal, avoiding unnecessary additives, preservatives, or excessive sodium often found in store-bought options.
  • Customizable Flavor: This recipe provides a fantastic base, allowing you to tweak spices and seasonings to match your preference. Want more heat? Add a pinch of cayenne. Prefer a smokier profile? Increase the smoked paprika!
  • Superior Texture: Many store-bought veggie burgers can be mushy or dry. Our recipe focuses on creating a dense, compact patty that holds its shape beautifully, whether you’re grilling, baking, or pan-frying.
  • Packed with Nutrients: Black beans are a powerhouse of plant-based protein and fiber, making these burgers incredibly filling and beneficial for digestion. Coupled with oats and almond flour, you’re getting a nutrient-dense meal.
  • Economical: Preparing burgers from scratch is often more budget-friendly than purchasing specialty vegan burgers.

We already have several delicious veggie burger recipes on the blog, but these black bean burgers truly shine by putting black beans front and center. Their inherent richness and versatility are showcased, resulting in a burger that’s not only incredibly delicious but also exceptionally satisfying. Their dense and compact nature makes them wonderfully versatile – perfect for classic burger buns, light lettuce wraps, or even crumbled into a hearty salad or power bowl. They are designed to stand up to your favorite toppings without crumbling, ensuring a delightful bite every time.

Essential Ingredients for the Best Black Bean Burgers

Crafting the perfect black bean burger starts with selecting the right ingredients. Each component in this recipe plays a crucial role in achieving the ideal flavor, texture, and stability that makes these burgers truly stand out. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll need:

  • Ground Flaxseed (for Flax Eggs): This vegan binding agent is a marvel! When mixed with water, ground flaxseed creates a gelatinous “egg” that helps hold the burger patties together, preventing them from falling apart during cooking. It also adds a boost of omega-3 fatty acids and fiber.
  • Eden Foods Organic Black Beans: The star of our show! We highly recommend Eden Foods Organic Black Beans for their exceptional quality. They are organic, canned without chemical additives, and, importantly, without added salt, giving you full control over the seasoning. These black turtle beans boast a mild sweetness and a buttery texture, making them incredibly versatile for everything from burgers to soups and stews. Their valuable antioxidant carotenoids also give them their distinctive dark color.
  • Almond Flour: A gluten-free powerhouse that acts as a superb binder, adding a subtle richness and moisture to the patties. It helps achieve that dense yet tender consistency.
  • Gluten-Free Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats: Another essential binder that contributes to the burger’s hearty texture and provides additional fiber. Make sure to use old-fashioned (not instant) oats for the best results, and certified gluten-free if necessary.
  • Garlic Powder: Infuses a savory depth that forms the backbone of the burger’s flavor profile.
  • Cumin: Adds a warm, earthy, and slightly smoky flavor that complements the black beans beautifully, a hallmark of many delicious plant-based dishes.
  • Chili Powder: Provides a mild kick and a complex blend of spices, enhancing the overall savory and aromatic qualities of the burger.
  • Smoked Paprika: This is where the magic happens for that classic “burger” taste! Smoked paprika delivers a deep, smoky aroma and flavor without needing any animal products.
  • Himalayan Sea Salt & Ground Black Pepper: Essential for seasoning, balancing and amplifying all the other flavors. Adjust to your personal taste.
  • Eden Foods Organic Roasted Sesame Tahini: A secret weapon for adding incredible moisture, a creamy texture, and a rich, nutty depth to the burgers. It also acts as an additional binder, ensuring your patties are wonderfully cohesive. Its distinctive flavor pairs exceptionally well with the earthy spices.

That’s it! These carefully selected ingredients come together to create black bean burgers that are not only easy to make but also incredibly flavorful and satisfying.

Step-by-Step Guide to Crafting Your Best Black Bean Burgers

Making these homemade black bean burgers is a straightforward process, ensuring you get flavorful, perfectly textured patties every time. Follow these steps for success:

1. Prepare Your Workspace: First things first, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). While the oven heats up, line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. This simple step prevents sticking and makes cleanup a breeze. Also, prepare your flax eggs by combining ground flaxseed with filtered water and letting it sit for 5 minutes until it thickens.

2. Mash the Black Beans: Drain and rinse a couple of cans of Eden Foods Organic Black Beans. Transfer them to a large mixing bowl. Using a fork or a potato masher, gently smash the beans. The key here is to aim for about 50% smashed, leaving a good portion of whole beans intact. This creates a wonderful texture in your burgers – a mix of creamy and chunky, preventing a completely mushy patty.

Organic black beans, partially smashed in a clear glass bowl, are now topped with gluten-free oats, aromatic spices, and creamy tahini, ready to be mixed for the perfect burger batter.

3. Combine All Ingredients: To the mashed black beans, add your prepared flax eggs, almond flour, gluten-free old-fashioned rolled oats, garlic powder, cumin, chili powder, smoked paprika, Himalayan sea salt, black pepper, and, crucially, the Eden Foods Organic Roasted Sesame Tahini. The tahini not only adds incredible flavor but also helps bind the mixture and adds moisture.

4. Mix Thoroughly: Using your hands (the best tool for this!) or a sturdy spoon, mix everything in the bowl exceptionally well until the burger mixture is thick, compact, and uniformly combined. You want to ensure all the spices and binders are evenly distributed. The mixture should be firm enough to form into patties without crumbling. If it feels too dry, add a tiny bit more tahini or a tablespoon of water at a time until the desired consistency is reached. If it’s too wet, add a little more almond flour or oats.

5. Form the Patties: Using a 1/3 cup measuring cup as a guide, scoop out portions of the mixture. This helps ensure your burgers are roughly the same size and cook evenly. Transfer each scoop to the parchment-lined baking sheet. Gently press down on the burgers with the bottom of the measuring cup or your palm to flatten them into uniform patties, about ½ to ¾ inch thick. This recipe typically yields 6-8 burgers, depending on their size.

Baking and Beyond: Tips for Perfect Black Bean Burgers

Once your black bean burger patties are formed and ready, it’s time to cook them to perfection. Here’s how to ensure they’re golden, firm, and ready for your favorite toppings.

Baking Instructions: Transfer the baking sheet of formed patties to your preheated 350°F (175°C) oven. Bake the burgers for a total of 20 minutes. Be sure to carefully flip them with a spatula after the 10-minute mark to ensure even baking and a beautiful golden-brown crust on both sides.

Achieving Your Desired Texture: The baking time can be adjusted slightly based on your preference:

  • For Drier, Crispier Burgers: If you prefer a firmer, more “grilled” texture, you can bake them for an additional 5-7 minutes. Keep a close eye on them to prevent over-drying.
  • For Softer, More Pliable Patties: If you like your burgers a bit softer and more yielding, stick to the 20-minute baking time.

Alternative Cooking Method: Pan-Frying for Extra Crispiness: While baking is convenient and healthy, for an extra crispy exterior, you can also pan-fry these burgers on the stovetop. Heat a tablespoon of oil (like avocado or olive oil) in a large non-stick skillet over medium heat. Carefully place the patties in the hot pan, ensuring not to overcrowd it. Cook for about 4-6 minutes per side, or until deeply golden brown and heated through. This method creates a wonderful crust that adds another layer of texture to your burger experience.

Once cooked, your black bean burgers are ready for assembly! They will be firm, flavorful, and won’t fall apart, making them a joy to handle and eat.

  • Sautéed Mushrooms or Caramelized Onions: Earthy and sweet, these toppings bring a sophisticated touch.
  • Vegan Cheese: A slice of your favorite plant-based cheddar, smoked gouda, or pepper jack melts beautifully.
  • Spicy Jalapeños or Pickled Banana Peppers: For those who love a bit of heat.

Innovative Ways to Serve Your Black Bean Burgers:

These versatile burgers can be enjoyed in various ways, catering to different preferences and dietary needs:

  • On a Classic Bun: Opt for whole wheat buns for extra fiber, or gluten-free buns if desired. Toast them lightly for added texture.
  • Crisp Lettuce Wraps: For a lighter, low-carb option, large lettuce leaves (like butter lettuce or romaine hearts) make excellent wraps.
  • Open-Faced: Serve a patty on half a bun or a slice of toasted bread with toppings.
  • In a Grain Bowl: Crumble a cooked patty over a bowl of quinoa, brown rice, or farro with roasted vegetables and a zesty dressing.
  • Over a Salad: Slice a burger and add it to a large green salad for a protein-packed meal.

I personally love mine served with the tangy Eden Foods Organic Sauerkraut, fresh tomato, crisp lettuce, and a generous squeeze of Eden Foods Organic Yellow Mustard. This combination creates a perfect balance of savory, sweet, and tangy flavors.

Perfect Pairings & Side Dishes:

Complete your burger meal with these delicious sides:

  • Crispy Fries or Sweet Potato Fries: A timeless classic!
  • Coleslaw: A creamy or vinaigrette-based coleslaw adds freshness.
  • Side Salad: A simple green salad with a light dressing.
  • Roasted Vegetables: Asparagus, broccoli, or bell peppers.
  • Corn on the Cob: A summer favorite!

These black bean burgers are destined to become your new favorite summer burger, not only because they are packed with protein and wholesome ingredients, but also because their sturdy construction ensures they remain intact and delicious, bite after satisfying bite. Store any leftover cooked burgers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 to 5 days. For longer-term storage, they freeze beautifully. Simply wrap individual patties tightly in plastic wrap and then place them in a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 2-3 months. Reheat from frozen or thawed in the oven, on the stovetop, or even in a microwave.

Description

Best black bean burgers made with black beans, almond flour, and oats. Enjoy with your favorite toppings for plant-based burger night!

Ingredients

Best Black Bean Burgers

  • 2 flax eggs (2 TBSP ground flaxseed + 5 TBSP filtered water)
  • 2 15-oz. cans Eden Foods Organic Black Beans
  • 3/4 cup almond flour
  • 1/4 cup gluten-free old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/41/2 tsp Himalayan sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 TBSP Eden Foods Organic Roasted Sesame Tahini

For serving

  • Eden Foods Organic Sauerkraut
  • Tomato
  • Lettuce
  • Eden Foods Organic Yellow Mustard

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Add the black beans to a mixing bowl and slightly smash them, leaving some whole beans intact. Add in the almond flour, oats, garlic powder, cumin, chili powder, smoked paprika, Himalayan sea salt, black pepper, and tahini. Mix well to combine. The batter should be pretty thick and compact.
  3. Using a ~1/3 cup measuring cup, scoop out the mixture and transfer it to the parchment lined baking sheet. Gently press down on the burgers with the bottom of the measuring cup to flatten them. The recipe makes about 6-8 burgers.
  4. Bake the burgers for a total of 20 minutes, carefully flipping them with a spatula after 10 minutes. Bake the burgers longer for drier crispier burgers and less time for softer, more pliable patties.
  5. Enjoy burgers on a bun or in a lettuce wrap with all of your favorite toppings. I love mine with sauerkraut, tomato, lettuce, and mustard.
  6. Store leftover burgers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 to 5 days and freeze them for long term storage.
