As spring transitions into the warmer days of early summer, my partner M and I find ourselves eagerly anticipating the return of the hummingbirds to our Maryland backyard. A quick search on Google suggests these tiny, energetic birds typically make their appearance by mid-April. However, as May approaches, we’ve collectively decided that our beloved hummers are officially running late this year!

Perhaps they didn’t receive the memo that our deck is fully prepared for their arrival, complete with fresh feeders and a comfy lounging area for us to watch them from! There’s a playful, unspoken competition brewing between M and me: who will catch the first glimpse of a hummingbird?

My bet is on M. He has a wonderful habit of sitting quietly on the couch, thoughtfully gazing out the window in tranquil silence. My own opportunities to simply stare out the window are usually reserved for the precious moments I take to enjoy my lunch. Luckily, we have two feeders strategically hung on the deck, perfectly visible from both our living room couch and the dining room table. This means that while savoring a delightful meal, I can keep a watchful eye on the feeders for any signs of impossibly fast wings and dazzling flashes of green.

Coincidentally, there are also wonderful flashes of green within my current favorite lunch creation – a meal I happily devour while keeping my hummer-watch going strong.
