Hilary's Burgers with Grain-Free Buns (3 Ways!) by Flora & Vino - A vibrant, healthy, and plant-based meal featuring delicious veggie burgers with creative, grain-free bun alternatives.

How was your recent long weekend? Mine was wonderfully productive and quite fulfilling, providing a perfect balance of activity and preparation. I even ventured into outdoor climbing for the very first time, a truly exhilarating experience – you can catch all the thrilling details and photos from that adventure on my Instagram!

While many embrace holidays for pure relaxation, I, rather ironically, dedicated my Labor Day to some serious “laboring” around the house. I embarked on a deep-cleaning mission, tackling everything from dusty ceiling fans to neglected baseboards, ensuring every corner sparkled. More importantly, I conquered a meal prep session of epic proportions, the likes of which my fridge hasn’t seen since before 2019! We’re talking meticulously prepared quinoa, freshly chopped crisp celery, sparkling clean berries, and perfectly baked sweet potato rounds, all ready to fuel a week of healthy, convenient eating. To properly send off the summer season in style, I even whipped up a batch of my renowned Sweet & Spicy Tomato Jam, adding a burst of seasonal flavor to my culinary efforts.

But before we fully transition into autumn recipes and pack away our grills, I wanted to share my absolute favorite go-to burger combinations. These “Hilary’s Burgers with Grain-Free Buns (3 Ways!)” represent the pinnacle of how I enjoy my beloved vegetable patties – deliciously, creatively, and completely grain-free! Whether you’re a long-time vegan, exploring gluten-free options, or simply seeking healthier alternatives, these creative bun ideas will transform your burger experience.

Why Hilary’s Veggie Burgers Are the World’s Best (and My Top Pick!)

My partner, Marco, frequently teases me about my consistent veggie burger consumption. Specifically, my unwavering devotion to Hilary’s Eat Well World’s Best Veggie Burger. And honestly, I can’t blame him for noticing, because they truly live up to their name! These certified organic veggie burgers are an absolute game-changer in the world of plant-based eating. They’re meticulously crafted with wholesome, nutrient-dense ingredients like whole grain millet, sweet potato, and vibrant leafy greens, all packed into an incredibly easy-to-prepare, flavorful vegan and gluten-free patty. This blend not only offers superb taste but also provides a satisfying texture that holds up beautifully to various toppings.

Even on days when my fridge is overflowing with delicious homemade leftovers, I often find myself heating a Hilary’s burger on the stovetop. Why? Because, quite simply, they possess a unique ability to make everything taste better. They add a boost of savory flavor, wholesome nutrition, and satisfying substance that elevates any meal, turning a simple plate of leftovers into a complete and exciting dish. But beyond being a fantastic companion to other foods, they are absolutely stellar in their own right, providing a delicious, convenient, and wholesome meal every single time. Their versatility makes them a pantry staple for anyone seeking quick, healthy, and plant-based options.

Embracing Grain-Free: Creative Alternatives to Traditional Buns

If you’ve followed Flora & Vino for a while, you know that I conscientiously avoid gluten and focus on crafting naturally gluten-free and plant-based recipes. Consequently, I very rarely enjoy my Hilary’s burgers on a “real” bun – you know, the traditional breaded wheat variety. While the gluten-free bread market has certainly expanded over the years, I haven’t yet discovered a commercial gluten-free bun that truly captures my heart and taste buds in the same way these natural alternatives do. Until that perfect bun emerges, I love getting creative with innovative, veg-centric alternatives. These options make enjoying my favorite burger effortless, undeniably delicious, and perfectly grain-free! These aren’t just for those actively avoiding gluten; they’re for anyone seeking to add more nutrient-rich vegetables to their diet, explore exciting new textures, and savor a lighter, more vibrant burger experience without compromising on flavor or satisfaction.

1. The Sweet Potato Bun: A Naturally Sweet and Sturdy Foundation

Our first incredible grain-free bun option is the classic and ever-popular sweet potato bun. I first fell head over heels for this concept while developing my Sweet Potato Sliders recipe, and I’ve been completely hooked ever since. These versatile rounds offer the perfect carb swap-out, providing a naturally sweet and earthy flavor profile that beautifully complements a savory burger patty, all while offering a satisfyingly sturdy base. They transform a simple meal into something truly special, offering a delightful contrast of flavors and textures.

When selecting your sweet potatoes for buns, opt for larger ones if you’re aiming for a single, comprehensive bun that fully encases each patty. However, don’t fret if you only have smaller potatoes; you can easily use several small rounds to create a layered, equally delicious, and structurally sound base. I typically bake my sweet potato rounds to achieve that ideal tender-yet-firm texture, ensuring they’re cooked through but still robust enough to hold up. This involves preheating the oven to 350°F (175°C) and baking for about 30-40 minutes, flipping once. But I recently learned a fantastic shortcut from Marco: the microwave! I was genuinely amazed at how effectively the microwave softened and perfectly cooked the potato slices in just a few minutes, making this option even quicker for those super busy weeknights.

For this delightful sweet potato bun version, I loaded my Hilary’s burger with an abundance of quick, homemade guacamole. To make it, simply smash half an avocado with a squeeze of fresh lime juice and a sprinkle of Himalayan sea salt – it’s genuinely that easy and adds a burst of freshness! The creamy, tangy guacamole perfectly complements the inherent sweetness of the sweet potato and the savory notes of the burger patty, creating a harmonious blend of flavors and satisfying textures.

2. The Portobello Mushroom Bun: Earthy, Meaty, and Umami-Rich

Next up, we have the incredibly versatile Portobello Mushroom Bun. It truly feels like nature designed these mushrooms specifically to be the perfect size and shape for burger patties – it can’t be a coincidence! I first showcased these hearty caps in my Tempeh Burgers with Portobello Mushroom Buns recipe, and they instantly became a fan favorite for their hearty, umami-rich flavor and satisfying, almost “meaty” texture that truly makes a statement.

For the best results with your portobello buns, always choose larger caps, as they tend to shrink noticeably when cooked. Before cooking, be sure to thoroughly pat them dry and gently scrape out the dark gills from the underside. This crucial step prevents excess moisture from being released during cooking, resulting in a firmer, more desirable texture for your bun. While you can certainly marinate the mushrooms in advance for an extra flavor boost – a simple mix of tamari (or soy sauce), minced garlic, and a touch of maple syrup works wonders – a quick pan-sear with minimal seasoning, as I did here, is equally delicious and efficient. The natural, earthy flavors of the portobello shine through beautifully with just a touch of oil and salt.

I absolutely adore pairing the rich, umami notes of these mushrooms with toppings reminiscent of a classic Reuben sandwich. Imagine a generous spread of creamy vegan mayonnaise, a slice of melty vegan cheese that oozes enticingly, and a pile of tangy sauerkraut, all nestled atop your Hilary’s patty. This combination is a true flavor explosion – a perfect balance of savory, tangy, and creamy! It might be a little messy to pick up and eat with your hands, but trust me, it’s entirely worth the delicious indulgence. Simply grab a fork and knife, and savor every wholesome bite of this unique and satisfying burger creation.

3. The Lettuce Wrap: Light, Crisp, and Refreshingly Low-Carb

Finally, we conclude our grain-free bun tour with the beloved classic: the low-carb lettuce wrap. This option is perfect when you’re craving a truly light, fresh, and refreshing meal, or perhaps when you’re playfully torn between enjoying a crisp salad and a satisfying burger. It ingeniously offers the best of both worlds, delivering a delightful crunch and a clean, vibrant taste that won’t weigh you down.

For the ultimate lettuce wrap experience, I highly recommend using large leaves of sturdy romaine lettuce. Their natural cup-like shape and robust, slightly rigid texture make them absolutely ideal for holding all your delicious fillings without any worry of them falling apart. You have a couple of assembly options: you can either place one leaf underneath the patty and another on top, creating a traditional bun-like enclosure, or for a truly secure and easy-to-handle wrap, use one extra-large leaf to artfully envelop the entire burger and its condiments, creating a neat package.

For this specific rendition, I drew inspiration from vibrant Greek flavors, transforming the burger into a Mediterranean-inspired delight. I topped my Hilary’s burger with juicy, thinly sliced beefsteak tomato, a generous smear of creamy hummus (or tahini for an even lighter touch), and briny, salty, sliced olives. The chosen lettuce leaves are surprisingly sturdy, effectively containing all these flavorful condiments without any fuss or mess, ensuring each bite is perfectly balanced and bursting with fresh, zesty flavor. This combination is incredibly fresh, wonderfully satisfying, and guilt-free.

Customize Your Creation: Toppings and Variations for Every Palate

These Hilary’s Burgers with Grain-Free Buns (3 Ways!) are designed to be both simple to prepare and incredibly versatile, allowing for endless customization. You can whip up one of these delicious and healthy combinations in under 30 minutes, making them the perfect solution for a creative, plant-based main meal, especially as we savor the last golden days of late summer or transition into cozy autumn evenings. The inherent beauty of these grain-free burger ideas lies in their remarkable adaptability – the fixings and flavor profiles are entirely up for grabs, limited only by your imagination and what you have on hand in your pantry and fridge!

Feel free to mix and match any of these innovative bun alternatives with your absolute favorite burger toppings, based on exactly what you’re craving at the moment. Beyond the specific suggestions for each bun type, consider elevating your burger with a sprinkle of fresh herbs like vibrant cilantro, aromatic parsley, or refreshing mint for an extra burst of natural flavor. Tangy pickled onions offer a delightful textural and flavor contrast, while roasted red peppers or sweet caramelized onions can add incredible depth and subtle sweetness to your creation. For those who love a bit of a kick, a drizzle of spicy sriracha mayo or a dollop of herbaceous pesto can elevate the flavor profile even further, adding complex layers.

And of course, for the purists, you can always go completely classic with timeless condiments like tangy yellow mustard, crisp dill pickles, and sweet ketchup. Don’t forget the final, satisfying touch: gently add your top “bun” (whether it’s another perfectly baked sweet potato slice, a beautifully seared portobello cap, or another fresh, crisp lettuce leaf) and gently press down a little to ensure all those delicious layers and toppings stay perfectly combined and easy to handle. Serve immediately and savor every wholesome, flavorful bite of your personalized, grain-free burger masterpiece!

Description

Delight in delicious veggie burgers served three innovative ways with grain-free, vegetable-based buns. Choose from savory baked sweet potato rounds, earthy seared portobello mushroom caps, or light and crisp lettuce wraps for a healthy and flavorful meal.

Ingredients

  • Hilary’s Eat Well World’s Best Veggie Burger

SWEET POTATO BUNS

  • 1 large sweet potato, peeled and sliced into 1/2” rounds
  • 1/2 avocado, smashed
  • 1/2 lime, squeezed
  • Himalayan sea salt

PORTOBELLO MUSHROOM BUNS

  • 2 large portobello mushroom caps, patted dry and gills scraped out
  • 1 slice vegan cheese
  • 2 TBSP sauerkraut
  • 1 TBSP vegan mayo

LETTUCE WRAPS

  • 2 large leaves of romaine lettuce
  • 1 slice of beefsteak tomato
  • 2 TBSP hummus or tahini
  • 5 olives, sliced

Instructions

  1. Before preparing your Hilary’s Eat Well World’s Best Veggie Burger, select your preferred grain-free bun choice. If opting for sweet potato buns, begin preparing them first. For portobello mushroom buns, you can start cooking them simultaneously with the burger patty. If you’re going with lettuce wraps, start cooking the patty first as the lettuce requires minimal preparation.
  2. For the Sweet Potato Buns: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Thoroughly scrub the sweet potato, then slice it into 1/2-inch thick rounds. Arrange these rounds on the baking sheet and bake for 30-40 minutes, flipping them once halfway through, until they are fork-tender and slightly browned on the edges. While the sweet potato buns are baking, prepare the Hilary’s Eat Well World’s Best Veggie Burger according to the package instructions. To assemble, place several small sweet potato rounds or one large round on a plate, then top with your cooked Hilary’s burger. For the quick guacamole, mash half an avocado with the juice of half a lime and a pinch of Himalayan sea salt, then generously add this on top of the burger. Finish by topping with another sweet potato round to create your bun.
  3. For the Portobello Mushroom Buns: Add the cleaned and de-gilled portobello mushrooms to a large pan with a drizzle of avocado oil, alongside your Hilary’s Eat Well World’s Best Veggie Burger. Cook for 5-6 minutes on each side, flipping both the mushrooms and the burger patty simultaneously to ensure even cooking. In the final minute of cooking, place a slice of vegan cheese on top of the burger patty and allow it to melt completely. To serve, place one portobello mushroom cap on a plate, spread with vegan mayonnaise, top with the veggie patty, a generous spoonful of sauerkraut, and then another dollop of vegan mayonnaise. Cap it off with the remaining mushroom cap for a hearty and flavorful burger.
  4. For the Lettuce Wraps: Begin by preparing the Hilary’s Eat Well World’s Best Veggie Burger on the stovetop according to package directions. Once cooked, place a thoroughly rinsed large romaine lettuce leaf on a plate. Spread a smear of hummus or tahini onto the lettuce. Add the cooked veggie patty on top, then garnish with a slice of beefsteak tomato and several sliced olives. Place another lettuce leaf on top, or wrap the single large leaf around the entire assembly, to finish your light and refreshing burger wrap.
