In our kitchen, fries and dip aren’t just a quick bite; they represent a conscious celebration of whole, nourishing ingredients. This innovative recipe transforms humble root vegetables into a culinary masterpiece, proving unequivocally that healthy eating can be incredibly exciting and deeply satisfying. We are talking about nutrient-dense purple sweet potatoes, baked to absolute perfection without a single drop of oil, and served alongside a stunning, naturally sweetened ketchup meticulously crafted from earthy, sweet beets. This is truly “plants on plants” for a resounding win, offering an explosion of fresh flavor and a wealth of health benefits in every single crispy, tangy bite.
Why Purple Sweet Potatoes are the Ultimate Base for Healthy Fries
As the seasons gently begin to shift and our thoughts drift towards cooler weather and the comforting embrace of cozy meals, our culinary imagination invariably turns to robust root vegetables. Sweet potatoes and beets stand out as perennial favorites, cherished for their versatility and nutritional prowess. While their individual merits are extensively celebrated, combining them in this innovative recipe elevates both to new heights of flavor and enjoyment. Purple sweet potatoes, in particular, are an exceptional choice when it comes to crafting healthy, homemade fries. Their unique characteristics allow them to truly stand out from their more common orange counterparts, delivering both stunning aesthetic appeal and an impressive nutritional punch.
Beyond the Beauty: Unpacking the Health Benefits of Purple Sweet Potatoes
More than just a feast for the eyes, purple sweet potatoes are a true nutritional powerhouse, generously packed with powerful antioxidants. Most notably, they contain anthocyanins – the very same celebrated compounds responsible for the vibrant hues and immense health benefits found in superfoods like blueberries and blackberries. These potent antioxidants are widely recognized for their potential to combat chronic inflammation, support robust heart health, and even exhibit promising anti-cancer properties. Furthermore, purple sweet potatoes provide a substantial dose of dietary fiber, which is crucial for promoting optimal digestive health and fostering a lasting sense of fullness and satisfaction after your meal. Rich in essential vitamins A and C, vital potassium, and crucial manganese, these vividly colored spuds are far more than just a tasty treat; they are a genuinely beneficial and health-enhancing addition to your daily diet.
Ideal for Achieving Perfectly Crispy, Oil-Free Fries
The inherent morphology of purple sweet potatoes also lends itself perfectly to the art of fry-making. They naturally tend to be longer and more slender than many other sweet potato varieties, making them incredibly easy to slice into uniform, appealing matchsticks. This consistent shape is absolutely crucial for ensuring even baking, which in turn guarantees that each individual fry develops that wonderfully crispy exterior while maintaining a tender, fluffy interior. While their flesh can be a bit denser and may require a slightly longer baking time compared to other sweet potatoes, this minimal extra effort is undoubtedly worth it for the superior texture, delightful flavor, and stunning color. If you find purple sweet potatoes challenging to locate, rest assured – any color sweet potato or even regular potatoes can be used as a suitable substitute, though you might just miss the exquisite visual pairing with the vibrant magenta beet ketchup.
Revolutionizing Your Ketchup Experience: The Magic of Beets
It’s time for a frank and honest discussion about ketchup. For far too long, many of us have uncritically relied on readily available store-bought versions without truly scrutinizing their ingredient labels. The undeniable truth is that the vast majority of commercial ketchups are unfortunately laden with excessive amounts of added sugars, which serve to mask their otherwise savory tomato bases with unnecessary and often overpowering sweetness. For many years, this was merely one of those ubiquitous pantry staples that I simply didn’t question, mistakenly assuming that its characteristic sweetness was entirely natural. However, once I became aware of the sheer quantity of added sugars typically present, I made a conscious decision to embark on a long ketchup hiatus, opting to cease purchasing store-bought varieties altogether. Yet, the deep-seated craving for that quintessential tangy, sweet dip never truly vanished, eventually providing the inspiration to meticulously craft a truly refined sugar-free version right in the comfort of my own home.
Go Beet or Go Home: A Healthier, More Flavorful, and Visually Stunning Alternative
If you’re going to invest the time and effort into making your own ketchup from scratch, why not ensure it’s truly extraordinary in every possible way? This homemade beet ketchup recipe is an absolute game-changer, ingeniously utilizing pureed cooked beets as a vibrant and nutritious substitute for traditional tomatoes. Beets bring an unparalleled natural sweetness, an incredible earthy depth, and a visually arresting, rich magenta color that is nothing short of captivating. This isn’t just a mere substitute; it’s a significant and deliberate upgrade! Beyond their distinctive and delicious flavor, beets are well-known nutritional powerhouses, abundantly rich in folate, manganese, potassium, and vitamin C. They also contain naturally occurring nitrates, which have been shown to help improve blood flow and contribute to lower blood pressure. Therefore, this exceptional ketchup not only offers an amazing taste experience but also delivers substantial and tangible health benefits with every dollop.
Practical Tips for Effortless Beet Ketchup Preparation
Creating your very own batch of homemade beet ketchup is surprisingly straightforward and accessible to any home cook. To further streamline the preparation process, you have the convenient option of using pre-packaged cooked beets or purchasing frozen beets and gently steaming or roasting them yourself. Either approach significantly reduces the overall hands-on cooking time. This recipe yields a generous volume, typically producing anywhere from 3 to 4 cups of vibrant ketchup, so if you anticipate needing a smaller batch, it’s incredibly easy to simply halve the ingredient quantities. The simmering stage is critically important, as it allows all the magnificent flavors – including tangy apple cider vinegar, rich maple syrup, aromatic onion, warming cumin, and fragrant coriander – to meld together beautifully with the beets, culminating in a complex, harmonious, and perfectly balanced dipping sauce. When stored in an airtight container, this delectable homemade goodness will remain fresh and flavorful in your refrigerator for up to two weeks, always ready to elevate any meal or snack.
The Perfect Pairing: A Feast for Both the Eyes and the Palate
The visual appeal of these homemade fries and their accompanying ketchup is truly undeniable. The deep, intensely vibrant magenta hue of the beet ketchup creates a breathtaking and striking contrast with the more subtle, earthy purple tones of the sweet potato fries. This exquisite aesthetic harmony transforms the dish from simply a delicious meal into a genuine culinary work of art, making it an absolutely perfect choice for sharing at an elegant dinner party or a more casual get-together with cherished friends. Imagine the sheer delight and impressed murmurs of your guests as they discover this uniquely healthy, incredibly flavorful, and visually stunning alternative to commonplace traditional fries and ketchup!

Description
Crispy oil-free baked purple sweet potato fries paired with sweet beet ketchup. Slice, bake, and season, then dip in naturally sweetened beet ketchup.
Ingredients
Purple Sweet Potato Fries
- ~dozen mini or 3-4 large purple sweet potatoes
- 1/4 tsp garlic powder
- Himalayan sea salt, to taste
- 2 TBSP fresh dill
Beet Ketchup
- 1 bunch steamed red beets, diced
- 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
- 3/4 cup filtered water
- 1⁄4 cup maple syrup
- 1⁄4 cup diced onion
- 1⁄4 tsp ground coriander
- 1⁄4 tsp ground cumin
- Himalayan sea salt, to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Scrub and peel beets and dice into quarters. Steam on the stovetop for 10-15 minutes, until fork tender. (If using pre-roasted beets you can skip this step).
- Combine the chopped steamed beets, apple cider vinegar, filtered water, maple syrup, cumin, coriander, and diced onion in a high speed blender and blend until smooth.
- Add mixture to a small saucepan and bring to a low boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 20- 25 minutes to allow flavors to meld. Add Himalayan sea salt and black pepper to taste.
- Store beet ketchup in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
- To make the purple sweet potato fries, preheat oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Scrub and peel sweet potatoes and slice into “fries” with a knife.
- Spread sweet potato slices onto baking sheet so that none are touching (you may need two baking sheets to achieve this) and sprinkle them with garlic powder and Himalayan sea salt.
- Bake the fries for 25-35 minutes, flipping halfway to achieve even browning, until lightly browned and crispy.
- Remove the fries from the oven and serve them with fresh dill and beet ketchup!
- Store leftover fries in the refrigerator and reheat before serving. Store beet ketchup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for several weeks.
