My partner, M, and I have made it a cherished tradition to escape for a blissful weekend of vineyards and hiking for the past two years, making this our third delightful visit to the region. Each trip brings new memories and a deeper appreciation for the stunning natural beauty and incredible local offerings.
This year marked a new adventure, as it was our first time bringing along our energetic 10-month-old Australian Shepherd, Flora. As it turns out, the journey itself presented the biggest challenge for Flora. She experiences quite a bit of anxiety in the car, and frankly, looked utterly exhausted by the time we finally arrived at our cozy Air B&B in Free Union, Virginia. We were a little worried about how she would adapt to new environments.
However, once we settled in, Flora completely surprised us with her impeccable behavior. She was a perfect lady at the vineyards, gracefully navigating new spaces, and quickly made herself at home in our weekend retreat. It was a testament to her adaptability and a huge relief for us!
Our days unfolded in a lovely rhythm: slow mornings began with aromatic coffee enjoyed on the patio, followed by invigorating late-morning hikes that allowed us to soak in the autumn air and vibrant scenery. Afternoons were dedicated to exploring charming local vineyards, savoring exquisite wines, before returning for cozy, relaxing evenings at the house. We absolutely loved venturing through the scenic trails of Sugar Hollow Reservoir, and our taste buds were delighted by the wines at Glass House Vineyard, Moss Vineyard, Stinson Vineyard, and Knight’s Gambit Vineyard.
