Hello, wonderful readers! Today, I’m thrilled to share a comforting and invigorating beverage that has become an essential part of my daily ritual: a homemade Cinnamon Almond Matcha Latte. Life, especially in the colder months, often calls for warm, healing liquids, and this particular concoction has been my go-to for a rejuvenating boost.

For those who’ve followed my journey on Instagram, you might recall my decision to switch from coffee to matcha earlier this year. It was a remarkably smooth transition for me, though I’ll admit my initial attempts at crafting the perfect matcha latte left much to be desired. After countless experiments and ingredient combinations, I’ve finally perfected my favorite recipe, and I couldn’t be more excited to share it with you. This simple yet sophisticated latte is incredibly easy to make, requiring only four core ingredients, five minutes of your time, and a short, sleepy stroll from your bedroom to the kitchen. Trust me, the delightful aroma and rich taste make it absolutely worth waking up for!

Embrace the Green: Why Matcha Deserves a Spot in Your Mug

If you haven’t yet discovered the magic of matcha, now is the perfect time to give it a try. For years, I wasn’t particularly fond of green tea; its sometimes “grassy” notes never quite appealed to me. Matcha, however, is an entirely different experience. It offers a wonderfully rich, smooth, and nuanced flavor profile. While it can have a pleasant, slightly bitter undertone, it’s balanced by a unique umami richness that makes it incredibly satisfying.

Beyond its distinctive taste, matcha boasts an array of impressive health benefits. Unlike traditional green tea, where you steep and discard the leaves, with matcha you consume the entire tea leaf, finely ground into a vibrant powder. This means you ingest all of its potent antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. It provides a clean, sustained energy boost, effectively clearing away morning brain fog without the unwelcome jitters, anxiety, or post-coffee crash that some, like myself, experience with traditional coffee.

Matcha’s high concentration of L-Theanine, an amino acid, promotes a state of calm alertness, enhancing focus and concentration. It’s a truly remarkable beverage that nourishes both body and mind. And, if the taste and health benefits aren’t enough to convince you, just look at it! That radiant emerald green hue is absolutely gorgeous, isn’t it? It adds a touch of beauty to any morning routine and is a feast for the eyes as much as it is for the palate. I’d carry that emerald green with me anywhere!

Crafting Your Perfect Matcha: Essential Ingredients and Tools

Making a delicious matcha latte at home is much simpler than you might think. While the recipe below outlines some of my preferred products and utensils for an optimal experience, please don’t let a lack of specialized equipment deter you! When I first started my matcha journey, my ritual involved a miniature strainer for sifting and a regular kitchen whisk to replace a bamboo whisk. A handheld milk frother was a luxury I only later indulged in. The good news is, anyone can make a fantastic matcha latte right in their own kitchen with just a few basic items.

Key Ingredients:

  • High-Quality Matcha Powder: The star of the show! Invest in a good organic ceremonial or high-quality culinary grade matcha for the best flavor and vibrant color. Look for bright green powder, not dull or yellowish, which indicates freshness and quality.
  • Unsweetened Almond Milk: My choice for its subtle flavor and creamy texture, making it perfectly vegan. Using unsweetened ensures you control the sweetness level.
  • Cinnamon: A generous sprinkle of cinnamon adds a delightful warmth and aromatic spice that complements the earthy notes of matcha beautifully. It’s a game-changer!
  • Optional Sweetener: While I often enjoy mine sugar-free, a touch of pure maple syrup (1/2 to 1 teaspoon) or another natural sweetener like agave, date syrup, or a few drops of stevia can enhance the flavor for those with a sweeter tooth.

Recommended Tools for the Best Experience:

  • Small Sifter: Essential for breaking up any clumps in the matcha powder, ensuring a smooth, lump-free latte.
  • Bamboo Matcha Whisk (Chasen): The traditional tool for whisking matcha. Its fine bristles create a smooth, frothy consistency that’s hard to replicate with a standard whisk.
  • Matcha Bowl (Chawan) or Large Mug: A wide-mouthed bowl or mug makes whisking easier.
  • Handheld Milk Frother: While optional, a small frother elevates your latte by creating luscious, airy foam, similar to what you’d get at a coffee shop.
  • Standard Kitchen Whisk: A perfectly acceptable alternative to a bamboo whisk, especially when you’re just starting out.

Also, a huge round of applause to Dan, who graciously lent his hands as our superstar hand model for this post! Woohoo! Poor guy, I’m not the best at shouting directions from behind the camera, but he did an absolutely fantastic job capturing all the scenes I envisioned to bring this recipe to life. I’m pretty sure he knows my matcha latte recipe by heart now, having witnessed (and helped!) countless preparations.

How to Enjoy and Customize Your Creamy Matcha Latte

This Cinnamon Almond Matcha Latte is more than just a drink; it’s an opportunity to create an energizing and cozy ritual to start your day. I love to prepare mine first thing in the morning, right after mumbling a sleepy hello to Dan and downing a refreshing glass of lemon water. It’s the perfect beverage to slowly sip on as you set your intentions and cultivate a positive vibe for the hours ahead, offering a moment of quiet reflection before the day truly begins.

One of the best aspects of this recipe is its versatility. Don’t hesitate to experiment with different plant-based milks to find your favorite flavor and texture. Cashew milk, with its naturally creamy consistency, or hazelnut milk, offering a deeper, nutty undertone, would both be fantastic choices here. For an extra rich and velvety texture, try oat milk – it froths beautifully! You can also infuse your latte with other flavors; a tiny splash of vanilla extract, a pinch of ground ginger or cardamom, or even a dash of cacao powder can transform the experience. Feel free to adjust the amount of cinnamon to your liking, adding more for a spicier kick or less for a subtle warmth.

And remember, this latte isn’t just for cold mornings. You can easily adapt it into a refreshing iced matcha latte by simply pouring the whisked matcha and cold almond milk over ice. It’s a delightful pick-me-up on warmer days too! Whether hot or cold, this latte is designed to be a moment of mindful enjoyment, providing both comfort and sustained energy to power your day.

Frequently Asked Questions About Matcha Lattes

What kind of matcha powder should I buy?

For lattes, a high-quality culinary grade matcha is often sufficient and more affordable than ceremonial grade. However, if you want the absolute best flavor and brightest green color, ceremonial grade is ideal. Look for brands that are organic, stone-ground, and sourced from Japan for authenticity and quality.

Can I make this an iced matcha latte?

Absolutely! Simply follow steps 1-2 to prepare your matcha shot. Instead of steaming the almond milk, pour cold almond milk over ice cubes in a large glass. Then, add your whisked matcha, stir briefly, and sprinkle with cinnamon. Add sweetener if desired.

How can I make my matcha latte extra creamy and frothy?

To achieve maximum creaminess and froth, use a good quality plant-based milk designed for frothing (oat milk is excellent for this). Heat your milk to about 140-150°F (60-65°C), then use a handheld milk frother or an espresso machine’s steam wand to create a rich foam. Whisking your matcha vigorously with a bamboo whisk also contributes to a nice foam layer.

Is matcha really better than coffee for energy?

Many people find matcha provides a more sustained and calm energy boost compared to coffee. This is due to the presence of L-Theanine, which slows the absorption of caffeine, preventing the sudden jitters and subsequent crash often associated with coffee. It offers a “zen focus” that coffee can’t quite replicate.

What if my matcha tastes too bitter?

Bitterness can often be attributed to water that’s too hot (boiling water can “burn” the matcha), too much matcha powder, or low-quality matcha. Ensure your water is just off the boil (around 175°F or 80°C). Use the recommended amount of matcha, and consider upgrading your matcha powder if bitterness persists. A touch of sweetener can also help balance it.

Description

Energize your day with this incredibly creamy and utterly delicious vegan matcha latte. Made with wholesome almond milk and a warming dash of cinnamon, this sugar-free recipe is your perfect pick-me-up. It’s quick, easy, and requires just four simple ingredients to create a rich, frothy beverage that will nourish your body and calm your mind.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp high-quality organic matcha powder (I have had the most success with this kind)
  • 1/4 cup hot water (just below boiling, around 175°F/80°C)
  • 1+ cup unsweetened almond milk, steamed (or your preferred plant milk)
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon, plus extra for sprinkling
  • optional sweetener: 1/2-1 tsp pure maple syrup, agave, or stevia to taste

Instructions

  1. Sift the Matcha: Place a small sifter over a large mug or matcha bowl. Add the organic matcha powder into the sifter and gently tap to sift it into the mug. This crucial step removes any clumps, ensuring a smooth, lump-free latte.
  2. Whisk the Matcha: Pour the hot water (ensure it’s just below boiling, around 175°F/80°C, to prevent bitterness) into the mug with the sifted matcha. Using a bamboo matcha whisk (chasen) or a small kitchen whisk, vigorously whisk the matcha in an “M” or “W” motion for about 30-60 seconds. Continue until the matcha is fully dissolved, vibrant green, and a layer of fine froth forms on the surface.
  3. Steam the Milk: In a small saucepan, gently heat your almond milk over medium heat until it’s hot and steaming, but not boiling. For an extra creamy and frothy texture, use a handheld milk frother to froth the milk for 10-20 seconds directly in the saucepan or in a separate mug after heating.
  4. Combine and Sweeten: Carefully pour the steamed, frothy almond milk into the mug with the whisked matcha. Whisk briefly again to thoroughly combine the ingredients. Taste your latte. If you prefer a sweeter flavor, stir in 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of pure maple syrup (or your chosen sweetener) until dissolved.
  5. Garnish and Enjoy: Finish your latte by sprinkling a generous pinch of ground cinnamon over the frothy top. Serve immediately and savor the comforting warmth and energizing goodness!
